ABSTRACT

The ship was designed to be "unsinkable," in that the hull was built with separate compartments that could be sealed off from each other. If one of the compartments was punctured, that compartment could be sealed and

the ship could continue sailing. In the worst case, if two or three compartments were flooded, it would take two to three days to sink and help should arrive. The problem was that in the accident, six compartments were flooded in the front of the ship, which caused the rapid sinking of the Titanic and high loss of life before help could arrive.
