Earlierinthischapterwecoveredthedevelopmentofbearingstressallowables.Theseallowabieswerepredictedonanedgedistanceof2D,where2Disthedistancefromthecenterline ofthefastenertotheedgeofthesheet(e.g.,fora0.250in.diameterfastener,2D=0.500in.). Theadequacyofthisassumptioncanbecheckedbytakingtwoshearareas(seeFig.26)out ofthewallthicknessandcomparingtheircapacitytothebearingallowableofthehole.
