Thepracticeoftighteningcriticalboltsinautomotiveapplicationstoclamploadsthatareat orbeyondthetorque-tensionyieldpointisbecomingmorewidespread.Theresultiscloser controlandhigherinitialclamploadinthejoint,generatedbyaprocesscontrolledbybolt strengthproperties(yieldtightening)ratherthanfriction(torquetightening).Sincethestrength ofboltsismucheasiertocontrolthantheirfrictionproperties,thescatterinclamploadfrom yieldorbeyond-yieldtighteningmethodsistypicallylessthanone-fourthofthatinconventionaltorquetightening.
