ABSTRACT

The most common method of installing a DTI is to place it on a bolt with its protrusions under and against the bolt head. Before tightening, there are noticeable gaps in the spaces between the protrusions (Fig. 2a). As torque is applied to the nut and the bolt begins to clamp the joint, the protrusions start to flatten. When the protrusions are flattened such that the height of the gaps between the protrusions has been reduced to a specified residual gap, required bolt tension has been accurately achieved (Fig. 2b).
