ABSTRACT

The design of most structures and machinery calls for the use of bolts to fasten parts together to form the desired configuration. The bolt is usually the unique object in the structure that affects the useful life of the equipment, and, like other machine components, a bolt can fail in fatigue if it is subjected to cyclic (fluctuating) loads. Since almost all structures are subjected to loads that are variable, bolt fatigue becomes an important consideration in design.
