ABSTRACT

Normally, a sample of three to five sets of bolts, nuts, and washers of each size and grade should be tested, When inserted in the calibrator, the end of the bolt should be at least flush with the face of the nut, after the nut has been threaded on the bolt. For bolts that are so long that the impact socket cannot reach the nut, add washers, shims, or spacers. The washer from the test set should be placed over the bolt last so that it will bear on the nut. For bolts that are too short, the substitution of a bolt of sufficient length may be acceptable. The calibrator can be attached to a convenient column or beam and the tests performed where the bolting will be done. Testing for any of the following procedures confirms not only that the bolts and nuts are capable of obtaining the correct tension but also that the installation method is working properly. You must consult your own appropriate specifications for exact testing details for each method.
