ABSTRACT
Only by generating and retaining needed tension in the assembly can equilibrium be sustained in the inclined surfaces of the mating threads to prevent transverse sliding and loosening. In the ideal assembly environment, a bolt will stretch enough, when engaged in a nut plate, to generate the tension needed to offset the effects of head embedment or any yielding of the clamped material and by doing so will sustain a secure assembly.
