ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we introduce a method of externalizing and utilizing human memory to promote the creation of knowledge. We focus on a knowledge medium called ‘associative representation representation’ in which nodes are connected by links that have direction and are capable of many-to-many mapping. We developed a system called CoMeMo which helps people to manage externalized memory using associative representation. To investi gate how effective the system is in real world situations, we implemented and tested several tools. From the evaluation of these tools, we found that associative representation had real possibilities for the management of ex ternal memory. However, we also found a limitation in that there is no additional information attached to the nodes. To cope with this problem, we proposed a new method for recalling context using a story structure, and implemented a system called CoMeMo Colleague. Later in this chapter, we outline a scenario to demonstrate the possibility of the method.
