ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss the idea that the explicit presentation of a scheme about a knowledge domain facilitates people’s understanding of the infor mation in the domain and their dynamic use of that information. This is discussed on the basis of results from cognitive psychological research on classification behavior. The psychological experiment which we report on in this chapter showed the following result — if people are given schematic knowledge explaining the causal relations in the information composing knowledge of a category, and they have enough time to examine the in formation, they can then use the information dynamically and infer other information to extend their knowledge of the category. The results of our study suggest that the POC should broadcast such schematic knowledge explicitly to support the dynamic use of knowledge by, and facilitate com munication to and among, community members.
