ABSTRACT

In this chapter, a definition of an intelligent machine is presented which is predi cated on how an inanimate device may modify human behavior. The efficacy or intelligence of the machine is then quantified (objectively) based on how it en hances the performance of the overall human-machine interaction. After an adap tation of human behavior is observed, a number of new issues arise, e.g. has this adaptation been for the better, is the machine that produced this effect now still intelligent, and what is the next and final step in this process? A simple example involving a human-interface device is presented to illustrate how an intelligent machine is developed. In a post hoc sense, the resulting modification of the overall interaction is then examined to evaluate the utility of the device in question.
