ABSTRACT

Mooyaart et a1.l reported decreased levels of PDE in patients with progressive multiple sclerosis. Minderhoud et demonstrated increased PCr levels in multiple sclerosis, reflecting a reduced metabolic state of the brain. In Case 61, 31P and total ATP signals are reduced not only in the lesions of MS but also in the right temporal lobe areas. This indicates that tissue damage and metabolic disturbance are present around as well as in the plaque. The PCr level remains unchanged, but the Pi level is increased in the area including the plaque, probably reflecting reduced high-energy phosphate metabolism. PDE levels tend to reduce. The PME level was elevated, presumably reflecting demyelination, inflammatory degradation of myelin, and an increased turnover in membrane phospholipid metabolism.
