ABSTRACT

Plain old telephone system is a traffic policing function and it should detect a nonconforming source as quickly as possible and take appropriate actions to minimize the potentially harmful effect of excess traffic. In its simplest form, traffic shaping does cell-spacing so as to smooth out the peaks in a cell rate at the expense of adding in more delay. Cell-transfer control includes priority control at the output buffers as well as policing function to keep the number of input cells within the declared traffic parameters. Traffic control procedures for Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) are not yet totally standardized. The ATM signaling based on the existing SS7 protocol is used in narrowband integrated system of digital networks. Integrated services digital networks user part call-control signaling is primarily link-to-link and it also has the provision for end-to-end signaling. Message formatting for signaling is independent of the message type.
