ABSTRACT

The management of Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks is a method by which a centralized administrative authority monitors the behavior of the network. ATM networks are large and extensive. The Operations, administration, maintenance, and provisioning (OAM&P) levels match the ATM networking layers. The ATM Forum has also defined a special OAM loopback cell, which is useful to test new installations and network troubleshooting. SMAE assimilates the information collected by the Layer management entities and produces an overall view of the device functioning with respect to its networking functions. The ATM Forum user network interface standards (UNI) specified in its first draft refers to an interim layer management interface. Interim layer management interface (interim layer management interface) allows two management entities in the nodes that are directly connected by a UNI to manage that UNI, through a symmetric, peer-to-peer protocol. The state-of-the art ATM management standards refer to the functions of the many existing management considerations of OAM&P.
