ABSTRACT

Mental health professionals working in clinical and educational settings are involved continuously in assessment. In addition to formal intake assessment and psychological testing geared toward determining a client’s needs and diagnosis, clinicians assess their client’s condition and progress each time they meet. Similarly, school psychologists assess the personality, intellectual functioning, and academic achievement of students. This chapter will first examine the major ethical issues pertaining to clinical and educational assessment, beginning with diagnosis, which is a primary goal of clinical assessment. The remainder of the chapter will focus on ethical issues related specifically to psychological and educational testing.
