8.1 OVERVIEW

The previous part described various key supporting technologies for web data management. This chapter describes what web data manage­ ment is all about. Closely related to web data management is digital libraries and Internet database management.21 Digital libraries are essentially digitized information distributed across several sites. The goal is for users to access this information in a transparent manner. The information could contain multimedia data such as voice, text, video, and images. The information could also be stored in structured data­ bases such as relational and object-oriented databases.
