ABSTRACT

The investigation and analysis of the slipmass and its genetic environment showed that the landslide on the north hill around the Scenery Reservoir in Xinjian County had the following factors and genetic mechanism: The thread of the stratification of gneiss ran parallel to the landslope so as to form a slip plane, the important geological basis for the landslide. The geomorphic condition of the slip is that on one hand, the storm cracks on the slope had been cultured; on another, the vertical surface was formed at the comer of the slope by building and digging the dam. The characteristics of the site was that there was a rather porous alluvial parent material and at deeper depths clay contents were lower. The accumulated moisture on the slip plane together with the clay fraction resulted in a reduction of the shear strength in the soft plane. The important cause was the condition before and during the storm which added the mass weight and caused the landslide.
