The basic unit of an effective animal care and use program is the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (lACUC) . The USDA, PHS. and AAALAC require an lACUC at any insti tution using cats in research. teaching. or testing. Important points regarding the composition of the lACUC include:
Number of members. USDA regulations require a mini mum of three members. while the PHS policy requires a minimum of five members.
