ABSTRACT

Treatment technologies used to effect perchlorate remediation strategies can be classified according to the fate of the perchlorate. In general, treatment may separate contaminants from the medium of interest (soil, groundwater, or sediments), immobilize the contaminants, or destroy the contaminants. The physical and chemical properties of the contaminant molecule determine how it may be separated, immobilized, or destroyed. Due to the solubility of perchlorate salts, perchlorate is typically treated using separation or destruction technologies, but not immobilization techniques. Contaminants that have been separated from the medium require further treatment or disposal.
