ABSTRACT
The history of liquid crystals abounds in discoveries of new phases and original phenomena. If most mesophases were found by accident, characterizing their structure was not always easy. The main difficulty is that, in order to accept the existence of a new phase, one must sometimes reconsider existing ideas. The controversy between Otto Lehmann and Georges Friedel, evoked in chapter A.I (volume I), provides an outstanding example.
