ABSTRACT
We already know that some molecular crystals composed of anisotropic molecules sometimes exhibit liquid crystalline phases (smectics or nematics) before melting into the isotropic phase (Fig. C.VI.1). These mesophases are optically anisotropic and they are all characterized by a long-range order of the molecular orientation.
