ABSTRACT
In Ref. 61, using a straight crack front, the maximum value of J calculated at the mid section agreed with the corresponding simple estimate of J from work done, albeit from the computed study not from a test result. The results are for two different configurations, bending and compact tension respectively. Some doubt must remain on whether or not the simple test formulae correlate better with mean or maximum values in an actual test.
