Pathogensassociatedwithseedsaretransmittedasaninfectionorinfestation (contamination).Infectionimpliesthatthepathogeniscarriedinternally,embeddedinseedtissues(Figure3-1).Whenapathogeniscarriedpassively,itisa contaminantorinfestant.Inthislattercase,thepathogeniscarriedeitheronthe seedsurfaceormixedwiththeseedintheformofinfectedplantparts,fruiting structures,orinfestedsoilparticles(concomitantcontamination)(Figure3-2).
