ABSTRACT

It is not uncommon to see a notion of causation expressed in terms of "dependence". Thus, when we write y=fctn(x) we say that y "depends" on x, and as we have seen, this is the basis of one class of causal notions. Capturing the essence of dependence is a bit of a problem, however, if one wants to speak at an appropriate level of generality. The purpose of this section is to extend the tools of MSC to a general theory of causation based on the idea of dependence.
