ABSTRACT

In fact, the acoustical disadvantages of E 12 started a new develop ment activity in tone systems, the so-called well temperaments. The problem of well temperaments is to permit all relevant intervals in a given style to be playable in any transposition. All keys are usable, but the sizes of the intervals between various degrees of the scale are not exactly the same in each key. This is thought of as an advantage, since it lends a distinctive character to the different keys (the idea similar to Indian ragas).
