Sugar and Fiber Crops

The total world production of sugar (sucrose) is over 80 million tons per year. About 55-60% of this comes from sugar cane and about 40% from beets. Sucrose from all other sources, such as sugar palm, sweet sorghum, and maple trees, amounts to about 1% of the total. The major sugar-producing countries are Russia, Cuba, Brazil, the United States, and India.
