ABSTRACT

Inhalation of mineral dusts can cause chronic diffuse parenchymal lung diseases associated with fibrosis (the pneumoconioses), chronic airway irritation (industrial bronchitis), and increased risk for neoplasms; occasionally it can initiate hypersensitivity reactions as well. The many various particles and fibers of occupational and environmental origin carry different risks for causing lung disease; some are relatively inert despite intense exposure, while others carry substantial risk with slight contact. This chapter presents concepts that are common to most diseases caused by inorganic particles and fibers and then offers specific information about individual agents and diseases.
