Radiographic appearances give important clues to the appropriate management approach to oxygenation failure. Lung collapse (atelectasis), diffuse or patchy parenchymal infiltra tion, hydrostatic edema, localized or unilateral infiltration, and a clear chest x-ray are common patterns (Fig. 3).
