ABSTRACT

Asthma is associated with increasing prevalence, costs, and mortality. However, it is a disease that largely can and should be cared for in the primary care setting. Because most asthmatic patients can be very well controlled with current therapy, it is gratifying for both the treating physician and the patient to witness the improvements in symptom frequency, pulmonary function, and quality of life that can be achieved with proper asthma manage ment. The objective of this chapter is to convey concepts and information to facilitate optimal care of asthmatic patients in the primary care setting.
