ABSTRACT

It is, of course, necessary that we solve the three equations of (6.4.4) simultaneously for the estimates ( 'Y, jl, d-). A straightforward trial-and-error iterative procedure for this purpose was outlined by Cohen ( 1976). An improved procedure, that is applicable to all types of truncated and censored samples as well as to complete samples, was suggested by Giesbrecht and Kempthorne (1976). It was given further consideration by Cohen and Whitten (1988). An adaptation of the Giesbrecht-Kempthorne procedure forms the basis for a subsequent subsection on computational procedures.
