ABSTRACT

The cost of energy has encouraged companies to take steps to decrease energy use in all phases of operations. Big slashes in energy use have occurred as a result of adding insulation, stopping steam leaks, using more efficient equipment, and turning off equipment not in use. The use of waste heat is one significant way that energy and money can often be saved. In one refinery, for example, a new waste-heat boiler in a fluid catalytic cracking unit permitted generation ofabout 55,000 lb/h ofsteam using heat previously vented from a stack.
