ABSTRACT

Following the approach of Section 6.5, we recommend the unweighted sums of squares substitutions in the balanced model equations of Section 6.3 for constructing confidence intervals on functions of the variance components in model (6.6.1). In particular, Stu. S~u. S~u. and f<H replace Sy, S~, S~, and K , respectively, in these formulas . Hernandez (1991) and Srinivasan (1986) provide simulations that indicate these substitutions provide good intervals for the functions considered in Sections 6.3.1 and 6.3.2. Srinivasan and Graybill (1991) made these substitutions in (6.3.3) and (6.3 .4) to construct good approximate intervals on PA = a~I'Y and p8 = a~I'Y where 'Y = a~ + a~ + a~. They also considered modifications to the degrees of freedom, but found that that the modifications are not generally needed.
