ABSTRACT

The model considered in this chapter is the random one-fold nested design. Although notationally simple, this model can be generalized to more complex designs and has proven useful to practitioners in a variety of fields. An example data set from a one-fold nested design is shown in Table 4. l . l . These data were reported by Swallow and Searle ( 1978) and represent the weights in ounces of five groups of bottles of vegetable oil that were selected at random from a moving production line. One objective of the experiment was to compare the variability in bottle weights among groups to the variability within groups.
