ABSTRACT
This assumption took shape when knowledge of vitamin A metabolism was rudimentary and the need was not understood for carefully metered concentrations of the active retinoid(s). This assumption has been reinforced by reports which have relied on techniques that had neither the sensitivity nor the specificity to measure enzymatically formed retinal or retinoic acid from substrate levels that reflect levels in vivo (68-71).
