ABSTRACT

I. INTRODUCTION Deposition of a coating on a fiber has been extensively used

for fabricating optical, electrical and structural components (14). At least two sources of residual stresses exist in the fiber/ coating system: the as-deposited stress due to the coating process (5); and the thermal stress due to cooling from the deposition temperature to the application tempcra~ure (6-8). Existence of these residual stresses frequently inlluences the mechanical and electrical behavior. Specifically, cracking and delamination of coatings are a frequent consequence of residual stresses (9, I 0). To ensure the successful mechanical behavior of the fiber/coating system, studies of these residual stresses have become imperative.
