ABSTRACT
Direct hydrotreating of residues is desirable in some cases, either as a pretreatment for cracking processes or to reduce sulfur. Since residues usually contain some metals, such residue hydrotreatment would have characteristics intermediate between catalytic hydroconversion (Sections 5.2-5.4 and 5. 7) and distillate processing because of deactivation of the catalyst.
