Abstract . The contribution deals with the historical importance of the basic paper in FEM written by Courant fifty years ago from the point of view of numerical treatment for multiply-connected symmetric domains. The types of symmetry that could appear are presented and some aspects of the cyclically symmetric history in FEM develop ment are pointed out .
