ABSTRACT

Genetic engineering technology has been exploited to develop diseaseresistant varieties. Plant disease resistance genes and defense genes have been cloned. Transgenic plants expressing these genes have been developed, and they show resistance against fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases. Genes from fungi, bacteria, viruses, insects, and human beings have been transferred to plants, and transgenic plants expressing these genes show resistance against various diseases. The use of genetic engineering technology in the development of disease-resistant plants is discussed in this chapter.
