ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the most developed African biotechnol ogy biosafety regulatory regimes, in particular those in South Africa, Kenya, and Egypt, and reports on the current status in a number of other countries where regulations are more preliminary. The Confer ence of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity adopted an agreement known as the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety on Janu ary 29, 2000. The Protocol seeks to protect biological diversity from the potential risks posed by living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology. It established a procedure for ensuring that countries are provided with the information necessary to make in formed decisions before agreeing to the import of such organisms into their territory.
