ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter, “Map the Future State-Customer Demand,” you began to develop a lean future state by drawing a value stream map to meet customer demand. In this section, you will continue this process to enable you to create continuous flow, assuring that internal and external customers receive the right work unit, at the right time, in the right quantity. We will describe the techniques associated with continuous flow and the process for mapping a future state that incorporates continuous flow methods. In this phase you will apply specific measures and techniques to ensure consistent fulfillment of customer requirements. You will:

1. Develop a continuous flow point of view. 2. Decide how to control the flow of work throughout the value stream. 3. Perform line balancing for the target value stream. 4. Implement standardized work for all processes. 5. Determine the layout of the work area.
