ABSTRACT

The dairy industry today faces economic and environmental challenges. The goal must be to structure a dairy operation on a land base that is adequate to operate within the rules and regulations of environmental control, but at the same time this operation must produce adequate returns to satisfy the needs of ownership and management. Profits have not been excessive within this indus try over the past 10 to 15 years, and today we find many operations struggling to meet economic goals. The additional challenge of meeting environmental goals will likely become the factor that results in liquidation for a large number of operations.
