ABSTRACT
CHAPTER 4 This chapter is devoted to the concept of emergy, introduced in ecology and ecological economics by H. T. Odum. Emergy expresses the cost of a process or a product in solar energy equiyalents. The basic idea is that solar energy is our ultimate energy source and by expressing the value of products in emergy units, it becomes possible to compare apples and pears.
