ABSTRACT

Sustaining environmental compliance is not easy, and the complex nature of envi ronmental regulation causes many organizations to experience noncompliance. As has been discussed extensively in this book, the best means of dealing with noncom pliance is to avoid it by establishing a foundation for achieving compliance and implementing practices that address environmental requirements. The occurrence of noncompliance not only suggests that an organization’s approach to environmental compliance could be improved but also triggers the need for deliberate and expe dited action to correct the problem. Organizations that are sufficiently committed to achieving total environmental compliance will address compliance problems promptly and take measures to prevent recurrences. Those organizations that fail to act with the necessary level of diligence will find that noncomphance becomes a routine condition.
