ABSTRACT
This chapter explains the implementation of behavior-based safety process for developing a Total Safety Culture. It explains applications of the behavior-based approach to industrial safety with Define, Observe, Intervene and Test (DO IT) process. The chapter focuses on the first two stages — define and observe. Defining critical behaviors to target for observation and intervention is not easy. A work team needs to consult a variety of sources, including the workers themselves, near-hit reports, injury records, job hazard analyses, and the plant safety director. A critical behavior checklist (CBC) is used to observe and record the relative frequency of critical behaviors throughout a work setting. If the CBC contains only a few behaviors or behavioral outcomes, it is possible to conduct observations without engaging in a one-on-one coaching session. This is often the best approach to use when first introducing behavior-based safety to a work culture.
