ABSTRACT

The origin of alcoholic beverages in China, like that in other civilizations, is clouded in mystery. It was said that Yi Di, an official in the court of King Yu, the founder of the Xia Dynasty (about the 21st century B .c .) , invented wine and offered it to the king, who became drunk, and said afterwards, “In future generations there must be those who lose their country because of this!” He then immediately issued the first prohibition decree ever.
