ABSTRACT

The problem associated with supplements containing ma huang is one example that appropriate governmental regulations are needed for botanicals with medicinal functions. Currently, different countries have different rules and regulations for these products. Many national governments, such as Germany, France, and Canada, have already established special review systems for herbs and botanicals. Some countries in Asia regulate those prod ucts manufactured in capsule or tablet forms as over-the-counter or prescrip tion drugs. Appropriate regulations and scientific and technological exchanges are needed for ensuring the effective and safe usage of herbal supplements in Asia and other parts of the world.
