NITRATE ASSIMILATION PATHWAY IN HIGHER PLANTS Nitrate is absorbed by roots using high-and low-affinity transport systems and then stored in vacuoles where it is partly reduced and transported by the xylem to aerial parts of the plant, where again it is stored in vacuoles or reduced.
