Occurrence of Acetylcholine in Plants Acetylcholine was first discovered, extracted, isolated, and identified by Ewins (1914) in preparations of ergot spur fungus C laviers purpurea. Other investigators were unable to reproduce his results and interpreted them as arising from bacterial confirmation.
