ABSTRACT

Structure and Functions of Campylotropous O vule-Mirbel (1830) was the first to classify the different shapes of the angiospermous ovule in more detail. He recognized orthotropous, campylotropous and anatropous ovules. In most hand-and textbooks of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century Mirbel's three main types were used. They were illustrated by Engler and Prantl (1889) in 'die natiirlichen Pflanzenfamilien'. Consequently this figure was incorporated in a number of botanical books, as those of Wettstein (1911) and Coulter and Chamberlain (1903).
