ABSTRACT
Terrestrial vegetation globally produces 200 billion tons of organic compounds, most of which reach the soil where they are later biodegraded. The elements they contain are released again in the surrounding medium either as nutrients or potential pollutants. Carbon returns to the atmosphere mainly as carbon dioxide. These ongoing flows make up the cycle of organic elements in the biosphere: mainly C, N, P and S.
