ABSTRACT

Subapical meristems, as their name indicates, are located very close to the extremities of the plant. The overall result of their activity is elonga tion of the plant by the formation of daughter cells. Lateral growth is clearly more limited, except in the formation of roots and lateral branches. The resulting organisms may be large and are often characterized by an elongated form with more or less lateral ramifications. After elongation, other meristems appear, the secondary meristems or layers (cambium, phellogen). These meristems result in greater lateral growth.
